What is a Will?

A will is a legal document which specifies how you would like your maoney and property to be distributed when you pass away. You can use it to provide financial security for your dependants, leave legacies to friends and family, set up trusts, choose your executor, appoint guardians for young children, limit your tax liabilkity and express your funeral wishes. If you do not make a will then the ‘intestacy rules’ will impose what happens to your property. This may not reflect your wishes or intentions and may not provide for your loved ones. It is therefore very important to make a will.

How do I make a will?

The procedure for making a will is very straightforward. You simply tell us what you want to achieve and we will draft a document that reflects your wishes. You can prepare your own will, but homemade wills frequently lead to disputes arising, so care does need to be taken if that is what you decide to do. If you appoint solicitors to prepare your will then you’ll benefit from the peace of mind that comes from knowing your affairs are in safe hands. We are experienced in dealing with all the common issues that can arise. We will be able to answer any queries and may be able suggest options for achieving your objectives that you won’t have considered yourself. We will also be able to offer guidance on your liability for tax and possible ways of reducing it.

Once the will has been prepared and approved by you, we will oversee the signing process. A will can be declared invalid if it is not properly signed in front of two witnesses, so to avoid a potential dispute arising we make sure that this process is carried out precisely in accordance with the legal requirements.

How much does it cost to make a will?

Prices start at £160 plus VAT for a simple, single will and £260 plus VAT for a pair of simple, ‘mirror’ wills. Additional cahrges are made for more complex wills and wills that incorporate trusts or life interests. We are happy to provide a fixed price quote if you let us know exactly what you want to achieve.

The cost includes:

  • meeting with you to take your instructions;
  • preparing a draft will for your approval;
  • making any minor amendments that may be required;
  • meeting with you to oversee the signing of the will;
  • providing you and your executors with a copy of the signed will; and
  • storage of the original will in our strongroom.

Unlike the service provided by some unqualified will writers there are no hidden extras.

We offer a 10% discount when you also instruct us to prepare a Lasting Power of Attorney at the same time. However, for a limited time we are offering a special family finance deal, where you can make a will and a power of attorney and save 40% on the normal price. Follow this link to our main website for full details of the offer.

What about hospital visits?

Our lawyers are happy to visit you in hospital or in your care or nursing home, though an additional fee is cahrgeable for this service. This service is available throughout Devon and Somerset.

Where is my will stored?

Once your will has been signed we will provide you and your executors with a copy and arrange for the original to be stored in our strongroom. No additional charge is made for this service.
